2010 Annual Conference Award Recipients Announced

TASSCC honored Debby Wattman, IRM for Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) with the TASSCC President's Award for IT Excellence.  Debby was commended for her service to the State of Texas and her agency with her innovative and collaborative projects which advanced the mission and goals of DFPS. 

TASSCC also recognized this year's recipient of the TASSCC Excellence Award, the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission Information Technology (HHSC IT) for their project, Women/Infant/Children Interactive Voice Response Project (WIC IVR).  This project used technology to significantly improve agency business processes and was developed with close collaboration between DSHS and HHSC IT.  To learn more about these award recipients click here.

Executive Leadership for IT Excellence (ELITE)

Executive Leadership for IT Excellence (ELITE) The Executive Leadership for IT Excellence course was held February 8 to 11 and March 29 to April 1. ELITE is designed for those in government IT positions who wish to develop and enhance the critical skills needed to successfully lead IT organizations at an executive level. The program had excellent participation, with 48 attendees, 6 of which were designated Information Resources Managers (IRMs). Of the program's 36 mentors, 33 of them were also IRMs. TASSCC supports this program by helping promote it, encouraging participation for both attendees and mentors, as well as providing financial sponsorships.

TASSC Scholarships

Scholarships are available for the Annual Conference.  A limited number of scholarships are available so apply early!   For more information about TASSCC scholarships, please visit our website at TASSCC Scholarship Program.

In March 2010 the TASSCC Board awarded $1,500 in scholarships to Texas IT professionals employed by state government and higher education. Courses approved for scholarships ranged from professional development programs such as Business Contexts and Legal Considerations to the DIR sponsored program SANS SEC 577: Virtualization Security and Operations. A total of 2 individuals were awarded a TASSCC Scholarship in March. The mission of TASSCC is to advance education and networking among Texas public sector IT professionals and we are excited to be able to provide these scholarship opportunities.

Consistent with TASSCC's mission to advance education and networking among Texas public sector IT professionals, the fund has awarded $24,731 in scholarships to public sector IT professionals in FY 2010 alone.
 

Technology Education Conference (TEC) Wrap-up

The TASSCC TEC Conference was held on March 10, 2010 and featured outstanding speakers including John Miri and Gary Gumbert who helped attendees focus on Results 2.0 – Delivering & Communicating IT’s Business Value. Attendees gained valuable insights for the effective use of virtualization technologies; techniques for communicating the business value of IT; and what the future holds for the intersection of collaboration, security and business processes. In addition, the conference was held at a new location, the AT&T Conference Center, which received great reviews from the attendees. TEC brought together technology directors from Texas state agencies and institutions of higher education to network and share ideas on one of the more challenging aspects of information technology, focusing on results to deliver the value expected from customers.

The presentations covered a wide variety of topics from Virtual Desktops - Blurring the Line Between PCs and Servers to Overcoming Today's Top Security Virtualization Challenges. For a complete listing of the agenda and links to presentations click here.
